I didn't see Paris at its best as the public transport system had been hit by industrial action when I went. Don't bother with the Eiffel Tower as it's even more tacky than the one at Blackpool and there's only so long you can pretend to be interested in what is, in fact, a big pile of scaffalding in the middle of the city.

If you like historic European towns, try Denmark. The locals are friendly and most of them speak English. They don't even beat you up when they get drunk or when there's a football match on

Place to avoid this summer: Germany because they're going to be hosting the World Cup, which means getting to host lots of England fans

The depressing thing is that a raving fascist lunatic like Nick Griffin is a voice of moderation compared with Tony Blair.

Things You Like | May 1, 2006 at 01:18 PM

The manager of Chelsea FC was still moaning when his team stuffed Manchester United and won the Premiership title on Saturday. He threw his jacket and two Premiership title medals into the crowd in anger.

One of the medals has resurfaced on Ebay - I'd love to see his face when he sees that he has chucked out something somebody is willing to bid £10,000,000 for http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jose-Mourinhos-Chelsea-Premiership-05-06-Winning-Medal_W0QQitemZ8804350541QQcategoryZ68295QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

EDIT: Awww, it's been removed

Political Scandal Predictions | April 27, 2006 at 06:30 PM

Today's newspapers had coverage of John Prescott's affair, Patricia Hewitt being heckled by nurses and the mess Charles Clarke has made of immigration. The Daily Mail even suggested that the Prescott story was leaked by the government to defelect the papers from the other scandals.

I'm proposing that we use this thread to predict future scandals involving corruption, sleaze or simple incompetance of our political leaders. Humerous and serious predictions are equally welcome.

PREDICTION: Tony Blair will stop the refit of HMS Illustrious and mothball HMS Ark Royal. He will say that since he has scrapped the only British fixed wing aircraft that can operate from our aircraft carriers, they no longer have a role in the modern Royal Navy. He will justify this policy by saying that the planned war against Iran has to be funded somehow.

The Tlo Parliament | April 27, 2006 at 12:42 PM

Are you sure that people in the Third World are that desperate?

The Tlo Parliament | April 26, 2006 at 06:14 PM

Passed. It's even worse in rural areas because of the lack of public transport.

PROPOSAL: To fund research into figuring out why it's always the ugliest politicians who have affairs, eg David Mellor, Robin Cook, David Blunkett and now John Prescott. I find it hard enough to believe that one woman could find John Prescott attractive, but two????

Think of the poor voice actors

Anyone who ends up getting confused between Jamaicans and trolls in a computer game must have started with some pretty major issues. He must also be unaware that many of the generic species in fantasy stories, such as trolls, dwarves and elves are taken from the mythology of the British Isles and Scandanavia.

Banning WOW because a handful of players read too much into the accents of the characters would be the equivalent of banning the sport of fishing on the grounds that there is always one idiot who doesn't realise that those "No Fishing" signs near overhead power cables are there for a reason.

Am I Fucked In The Head? | April 19, 2006 at 06:47 PM

As a species, we are genetically programmed to look after our own children and even to try to protect somebody else's children from danger.

This means that we regard a criminal offence against a child as more shocking than when the same offence is committed against an adult. Just compare the media attention to the Soham murders to the indifferent coverage to that known British spy who got murdered by the IRA a couple of weeks back, even though it proves the true level of committment Gerry Adams and his cronies have for the peace process.

It also means that a film director who cheerfully depicts hundreds of adults being brutally murdered in his film will hesitate to show this happening to a child because the adults in the audience are genetically programmed to find this more shocking.

To expand on your point, I hate the way that the media doesn't give a stuff about the appalling plight of the Third World, but when Kylie Minogue was diagnosed with cancer, that was a different matter. As her cancer was caught at an early stage and she is lucky enough to be a rich citizen of a developed country, it wasn't as if she was in any danger. Yet the media expected me to be more concerned about her than Africa because she is a household name, and the average African isn't.

Things You Want But Don't Need. | April 15, 2006 at 05:02 PM

Useless? Useless????

My USB lava lamp is a necessity! As is my USB LED christmas tree!!!

Pet Hates | April 14, 2006 at 06:49 PM

Next on my list is the morons who think that race relations can be improved by prosecuting a shopkeeper who displays some golliwogs in his shop window. As well as the cretinous police officers who think this should gain priority over actual crimes.

Children don't see anything racist about golliwogs until adults start telling them what to think, and nobody decides to support the BNP because they played with one during their childhood or they were lucky enough to read the Noddy books before the censors steamed in.

The really stupid thing is that cases like this are contributing to the growth in support of the BNP.

And while I'm ranting, I have another revelation:

The sinking of the Belgrano in the Falklands War was justified. The commanding officer of the Belgrano survived, and he later said that it was regrouping for a planned attack on the British fleet the next day, and it was not returning to Argentina. The BBC downplayed this detail because it got in the way of their efforts to discredit Margaret Thatcher.

11/9 Revisited - Flight 93. | April 14, 2006 at 12:18 PM

Perhaps Iran has the wrong type of democracy? It can't be a proper democracy if candidates who hate America keep winning

On the other hand, 17 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, as is Bin Laden. His family has close business ties with the House of Sauud, one of the most despotic regimes in the world. However, the House of Sauud is happy to do business with Bush an his cronies, which means that Saudi Arabia is clearly an important ally in the struggle for Freedom.

11/9 Revisited - Flight 93. | April 13, 2006 at 06:29 PM

I'm getting more than a little bit fedup with all this 9/11 heroism.

The passengers who allegedly tried to retake the aircraft only did so out of self preservation, which is not the same as heroism.

The people who worked to find survivors in the rubble of the WTC are no different to the people who do the same thing ater every single natural disaster in history.

As for the actual 9/11 attacks, how is this different to the blitz in World War II? Or the thousand bomber raids against Germany? People just got on with their lives as best they could.

I expect more propoganda films to come out in the coming months as Bush & Blair need to justify their Final Solution against Iran. The propoganda is an attempt to drown out the voices of those who when told by Bush & Blair that the Iranians are crying out for democratic freedom, point out that the current Iranian president gained power through a democratic election...

The Tlo Parliament | April 11, 2006 at 12:41 PM

PASSED, providing we get paid for five days and not two

PROPOSAL: There's some council elections coming up in England and Wales, so I propose that politicians be banned from saying "These results are a victory for our policies".

Every single party uses that argument from the one set of results

Aliens? Evil? Shome Mishtake Shurely. | April 10, 2006 at 12:20 PM

More Welsh yokels methinks. Positive Welsh characters seem to be even rarer than friendly aliens

The location isn't so far fetched - Pembrokeshire was the centre of a major UFO flap in the 70s and allegedly there is still a subterranean alien base off the Pembrokeshire coast. I incorporated this into one of my stories. Mind you, the Pembrokeshire aliens never probed or impregnated anybody. The personnel at the American base set up to investigate the aliens did, but that's another story.
