Call Of Duty 2 | August 27, 2006 at 02:15 PM

I'm constantly disappointed by the CoD series. The first one, for the PC, was a very enjoyable FPS, which allowed you to fight in various battles in the British, American and russian armies. Great stuff.

The same game, for console, was dumbed down, because all console players are dim. Charming.

CoD2 abandons the multinational approach altogether, and sticks you with the American army. Completely. Not only that, when I killed a squad member by mistake, the game ends and up comes 'FRIENDLY FIRE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.'

I mean, are they taking the piss? In the fucking American Army? Last time I checked, they fucking ENCOURAGED friendly fire.

Oh, so bitter.

Hey, I hardly had any of those pills.

Sound Of Silence | August 26, 2006 at 12:38 PM

I think amphetamines were the culprit there. Being constantly off your tits on Dexedrine would make you see all sorts, never mind UFOs.

Glad to hear it. I love some of the exclamations they come up iwth.

"My weapon is naked!", "I am causing injury!" etc.

Sony Drop Bollock. | August 24, 2006 at 05:02 AM

Another thing just struck me. In the ongoing competition between Blu-Ray and HD DVD, HD DVD has sold more players, but the PS3 will be Blu-Ray...so might this have a teensy effect on what format films are released on in the future? Microsoft are releasing an add-on HD DVD drive to the Xbox 360, but that's not the same sort of commitment as Sony's.

Oooh, the decay of moral fibre!

The Deep | August 23, 2006 at 02:09 AM

I remember seeing this when I was wee, and being amazed. Jacqueline Bisset in a wet T-shirt not five minutes in (total 'treasure' chest, ahem), Nick Nolte in a ridiculous 70s 'tasche and Robert Shaw as the Crusty Seaman.

An underwater adventure featuring a WWII ship full of drugs and explosives, a sunken galleon full of Spanish gold, sharks, Haitian drug dealers and a big fuckoff moray eel that crushes someone's head in its jaws. Perfect entertainment, really. Got it for sod-all on DVD, and I enjoyed it even more than I did when I was too young to appreciate the racist subtext.

Fried gold, chaps and chapesses.

On a sidenote, I remember seeing this on a weekend afternoon on the Beeb, but the BBFC rating on the DVD is a 15. Has there been a rating update done of older films? Because if this was a 15, surely they wouldn't have shown it on an afternoon? And I could swear Gremlins used to be a PG...

Another thing I like is that the game is European made, so the people that were in WWII are represented, for once. The Polish, Norwegians, Canadians, Spanish, French, Yugoslavians, etc. None of which get a look in most of the time.

Sound Of Silence | August 22, 2006 at 11:12 AM

Thankfully not a problem with this game, as A) It's based wholly in the European theatre, and B) There's only a few Yank characters in the game, and your main character can be Brit, Russian or Yank, it's up to you.

Sound Of Silence | August 22, 2006 at 08:09 AM

I don't like them much myself, but I believe the consensus over on SC was that we include them, so we don't alienate anyone.

Sound Of Silence | August 22, 2006 at 07:31 AM

I don't think I can properly justify writing two reviews of the same game. I'll add some scores for the SC version, because we're using scores for SC, right?

Sound Of Silence | August 21, 2006 at 11:31 PM

Isn't the SC version just the same but with the swearing taken out?

Sound Of Silence | August 21, 2006 at 09:43 PM

I would rather have an authentic WWII scenario, but my argument with the PKs is not that they're futuristic but that they unbalance the game so fundamentally.

Got a review of Hammer and Sickle coming up, which is based around the same game engine. I have yet to pick up Sentinels, but as soon as I do I'll review that as well.

Sound Of Silence | August 21, 2006 at 06:35 PM

Aye, Sentinels is an add-onn for Silent Storm. Hammer & Sickle is also excellent.

Sound Of Silence | August 20, 2006 at 11:37 PM

Cheers, Slaughter, sorted it.

I hope they make a lot more games like this. That's all I can say.
